Abstract: The 3$^{rd}$ International Seminar on Radioactive Waste Products, RADWAP '97, was held at the Maritim Hotel, Würzburg, Germany, from 23 to 26 June 1997. It was organized by the Forschungszentrum Jülich together with the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, the Kerntechnische Gesellschaft, the Deutsches Institut für Normung, the European Network of Testing Facilities for Quality Checking of Radioactive Waste Packages, the Commission of the European Union, in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC. The scientific programme consisted of invited lectures, presented by experts from the international scientific community. Additionally, there were approx. 50 poster presentations. Emphasis was placed on extensive discussions among the participants leading to increased understanding of technical and safety requirements on an international basis. Internationai proficiency will enhance confidence. This may be especially useful in the context of waste treated outside the country of origin and for countries with less important radioactive waste arisings. Furthermore, this meeting presented the opportunity to identify issues and options for future research. Additionally, it was intended to promote public acceptance of nuciear waste disposal. Some kind of international standard label may encourage increased public confidence in the quality control and quality assurance procedures in use for radioactive waste packages. Laws, regulations and waste acceptance criteria which cannot be controlled should be dispensed with. This will ciarify the complexity of laws, regulations and even waste acceptance criteria. Too often the quality of radioactive wastes is controlled only by "qualified" procedures following the rules of DIN, ISO or other certificates. Characterization by collecting data and papers, caiculations based on nuclide relationships, all these are useful and necessary tools for qualification, but cannot replace measurements. Radioactive waste is and has been in the past a mixture of materials and radionuclides, and all documentation efforts and computer simulation's, regulations and laws cannot reflect the complexity of radioactive waste inciuding the "human factor" since to err is human. Ergo: Trust is fine, but checking is better. Public acceptance of safe nuclear waste management can only be galned by conscientious work in science and technology and not by even minor scandals.
